What is going to happen to the French Quarter?
Come to Memphis Heritage Wednesday, February 1st at 6pm to find out!

The northeast corner of the Cooper-Madison intersection, site of the abandoned French Quarter Inn, is under contract to be purchased by a different ownership group than those that had recently planned to develop an upscale five star hotel.

Save Overton Square and the Midtown Action Coalition have asked for a public meeting to meet the new owners and hear their plans for the site. The new prospective buyers have agreed to meet.

Memphis Heritage has agreed to host this public meeting at their offices at Howard Hall, 2282 Madison Ave at Edgewood. Once again, the meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 1st at 6:00 pm.

All those interested in the future of Overton Square and their Midtown neighborhoods are urged to attend.

Bojo's Razed

The demolition of Bojo's Antique Mall at the corner of Summer Ave and N. Highland St has begun. A Family Dollar will be built in it's place. The building was built in 1932 with over 44,000 square feet and started out as Fortner's Fine Furniture run by Frank and Walter Fortner. Sometime from when the store opened until it closed in 1985 Fortner's acquired the iconic 15 foot Sealy Posturepedic clock. Robert Griffin bought the location about 20 years ago and turned it into Bojo's. The Fortner family has made plans to save the clock and possibly restore it. They would like to see it on top of another Memphis business ticking away. Family Dollar paid $480,000 for the location in November and plans to open this winter.

That part of Summer Ave has been named Frank Kelly Fortner. It was a Christmas present to Susan Hedgepeth (Frank's daughter) from her son Councilman Reid Hedgepeth.

We are getting ready for our 2011 Architectural Auction

which will be held at Sears Crosstown on Cleveland on Saturday October 22 starting at 6:30 pm

Architectural elements from across the city will be auctioned during the event which is

MHI’s largest fundraiser. Tickets will be limited.

Guests will receive great food, an open bar and entertainment, but also live and silent auctions that include rare and interesting architectural pieces of Memphis' history.

We were honored to have Mr. Hal B. Howard, Jr join us for the annual membership meeting, the first since he so generously donated Howard Hall to MHI. We presented Hal with a beautiful portrait that we will hang in the Grand Salon of Howard Hall. He was very touched by this gift and pleased to hear about all the great work we accomplished this past year.

We honored Gordon Alexander as the 2nd recipient of the Red High Top Shoe Award for his dedication and diligence in trying to save the Union Avenue Methodist Church and for forming the Midtown Action Coalition. Congratulations Gordon!

June reviewed the past year and discussed upcoming events like Adapt A Door Auction August 27th, Youth and Architecture Contest during the month of May and the Architectural Auction which will be held Oct 22 at Sears Crosstown!

We were proud to announce June received the Rosa Parks Award at the Citizens for Better Service 18th Annual Martin Luther King Jr Commemorative Reception.

Here's how it works... You decide you want to let your creative mind go wild and enter the Adapt-A-Door Competition by the deadline of April 7, 2011 ...we let you pick up the door of your choice at our Third Annual "Donut Door Dash" on Saturday April 9, 2011 . Contestants will be able to choose from a collection of doors, gathered by our dedicated Preservation Posse Volunteers, to recycle and transform it into a fabulous work of art. The only limitation is their imagination and using at least 70% of the original door. Then you make a personal, creative masterpiece out of your door which we will then auction off in August.

Last year we saw ALL KINDS of transformations, from coffee tables, to head boards, to a guitar! Let your creativity go wild and just do it! Be one of the first firms or artists to make your mark in this Annual one of a kind "Door" event! Many Door Designs will be on exhibit at various locations and at Howard Hall during the month leading up the auction event which is planned for Saturday August 27th.

Our Door Auction event will once again include awards for "Best of Door", a Silent Auction, great fun and pub grub. Other important info: Cost to enter the competition is $25.00 per door. For the $25.00 commitment fee you will receive 2 tickets to the "Door Auction" event, be eligible for the grand "Best of Door" award that comes with great prizes. Help Union Avenue Methodist Church!

PLEASE Donate now to the legal fund and help us continue our efforts to prevent demolition of this 100 year old historic church property

The chain link fence went up around Union Ave Methodist Church this week but CVS does not yet have a demolition permit. A second lawsuit has been filed requesting a temporary restraining order to prevent demolition, it is unclear how or why CVS was able to close on the property with an active lawsuit pending.

The Midtown Action Coalition is calling for all interested citizens to come to the site of the Union Avenue Methodist Church on Saturday, Feb. 26th at 10:00 AM and show their support for pending litigation to prevent CVS Pharmacy from demolishing the church and erecting a drug store. We will be joined by members of Idlewild and Central Gardens neighborhood associations, Memphis Heritage and other Midtown activists in picketing the site and showing our extreme displeasure at the irresponsible conduct CVS and Redd Realty have exhibited during this entire controversy. This issue is not yet resolved. We will neither cease voicing our concerns nor give up our attempts to open a dialogue with executives of CVS, despite their stubborn refusal to address the real concerns of the neighborhood.

Union Avenue Methodist Rally Saturday

The chain link fence is going up today around the Union Avenue Methodist Church at Cooper and Union in preparation for the demolition by CVS Pharmacy.

MIDTOWN ACTION COALITION will hold a rally at 10am this Sat Feb. 26th. All are invited to come and let CVS know how they feel about their disrespect of our MIDTOWN neighborhoods. Meet on the corner of Union at Cooper. Bring any signs you might already have.

Criteria
> A drawing of a Historic building / or part of an existing historic building in
Shelby County. Can be interior or exterior.
> Minimum paper size 8.5"x11", max size 18"x24"
> A separate hand written statement identifying this building or space, why it
was selected by the participant, and description of their response to it.
Maximum of 100 words.
> Medium of choice (pencil, ink, paint, crayon, etc)
> Judging will take into account the written statement as much as the art.

Awards
Sponsors will award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes to the division winners: Elementary Middle School and High School. (Categories subject to change based on number of entries.)

Display of Winners
Winners in each division will be on display at Memphis Heritage, Inc. at Howard Hall, 2282 Madison during the month of May 2011. All participants will receive invitations to the opening reception date TBA

Explores Mid Century Modernism

Every Monday in March

The 2011 Memphis Heritage's Preservation Series will be meeting on Mondays in March to explore Mid Century Modernism in Memphis. Although we still relish our buildings from the nineteenth century and early twentieth century, it is time to understand and embrace the architecture and spirit of the middle of the twentieth century. These underappreciated Modernists structures are rapidly disappearing from the built environment as most have not been designated eligible for or listed on the National Register.

The annual series will begin on March 7 with an Introduction to Modernism by architectural historian Judith Johnson. She will trace the world-wide revolution in sensibility which affected all the arts around the turn of the century, and constituted a profound reorientation in ways of thinking and seeing forms- a truly "international" style. She will discuss the International Style's three principals-architecture which emphasized volume as opposed to mass; regularity as opposed to symmetry, and outlawed arbitrarily applied decoration and show examples in our early 20^th century Memphis architecture.

On March 14, an exclusive tour will be offered of 5751 Sycamore Green Lane, a stunning d. 1965 residence designed by architect Fay Jones. Jones studied with Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1950s, but developed his own style reflecting our region. Interior Designer Michael Carradine will guide us through the extensive collection of Mid Century furniture and decorative arts that are showcased in it.

On March 21, the craftsmen of the Frank Balton Sign Company will explore the role of neon signage in bringing color and light to Memphis. As the discoverers of neon called it, this "Blaze of crimson light" helped our consumer-oriented society find the promise of modernism, whether it was in a movie theater, motorcycle store, or automobile showroom.

On March 28, Keith Kays, AIA and Marty Gorman, AIA, authors of A Survey of Modern Public Buildings in Memphis, Tennessee from 1940 to 1980, will present and discuss the architectural gems of both the commercial and residential buildings in Memphis.

An additional special treat planned for this year's series will be a guided tour led by Jim Ramsey of the iconic Mid Century Modern Memphis College of Art in Overton Park designed by world renowned Roy Harrover on Saturday April 2 (time TBD). After the tour, we will view "Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman", the visually stunning 2008 film documentary on the life and times of the architectural photographer who had a gift for capturing space, form, and design. Schulman's amazing work is credited with promoting, popularizing and preserving Modernist structures.

Our Preservation Series lectures will once again be held from 7:00pm til 8pm. We hope you plan to join us to learn more about the newest period of historic design as it passes the fifty year mark and becomes historic!

Judge Walter Evans did NOT grant the injunction to prevent the sale of Union Ave Methodist Church to Redd Realty/CVS for them to demolish and build a CVS pharmacy where this historic landmark stands. We have set up a Legal Defense Fund...

A Legal Defense Fund has been set up at all branches of Independent Bank to help defray the legal costs for the St. Luke's/Union Ave Methodist Church (CVS - Methodist Church) lawsuit in Chancery Court to prevent the sale of the property to CVS. The account was set up by Memphis Heritage and will be used only for any expenses generated from the suit.

The name on the account is UMAC Legal Fund (account #3011003)

It was set up at the I Bank branch on Union Ave., but you can make donations at any Branch. Please donate if you believe in this fight to save a Midtown Landmark in order that another "House of Worship" can possibly purchase it and keep it as vital part of our community.

If it's 5 or 10 dollars, no amount is too small - a thousand would be nice - but every little bit helps.

To address this important issue, a meeting will be held at Memphis Heritage Howard Hall on Wednesday Sept 1st at 6pm.

We invite all individuals, groups and organizations to come together and discuss this disastrous outcome.

Now is the time for us to come together as a united front to help protect the fabric of Midtown and Historic Preservation's future, and to prevent this type of insensitive development from destroying our neighborhoods and our City.

IMPORTANT...Ok folks here is what we are asking you all to do starting first thing Wednesday July 7th :

Even though Charlie Golden, VP at CVS corporate, told the National Trust last Friday that CVS would honor their agreement to not demolish any building individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places he is no longer returning phone calls from the National Trust. Also, there has been no action on the local level to pull their (CVS') plans that will go before the Land Use Control Board this Thursday July 8 at 10 am.

Please email the following individuals, and let them know how you really feel about CVS not honoring their original agreement! This is the last chance to request CVS pull their plans to demolish this historic Midtown Church.

CVS/pharmacy opened its first store in the city of Memphis earlier this year and we are committed to continue providing the community with high quality pharmacy services ... CVS and our developer, Redd Realty, are working cooperatively with the city to locate a store at the corner of Union and Cooper that will complement the surrounding neighborhood.
Together with the congregation that currently owns the property, we have completed extensive due diligence and regrettably the building is beyond repair. The congregation has announced it will use the proceeds from the property’s sale to fund their charitable programs. CVS and Redd Realty have begun the planning and permitting process with the city of Memphis and are currently working with the Office of Planning and Development to complete an extensive review of the site plan. We look forward to serving the Midtown community at our new store and taking care of all of their pharmacy healthcare needs at a convenient and accessible location.

The Memphis Regional Design Center in conjunction with the Memphis & Shelby County Division of Planning and Development, the Midtown Memphis Development Corporation, the Cooper Young Development Corporation, and the Cooper Young Business Association is pleased to announce the launch of efforts to develop a plan for the future of Midtown Memphis. The Midtown Plan will include an overlay district that will cover areas of Midtown that are not currently covered by the Medical District Overlay or the various Historic District overlays indicated on the map above. The yellow areas with a red boarder indicate areas of Midtown that will be studied in the coming months to develop guidelines that will help direct redevelopment in the area. While providing specific design requirements that will ensure that proper development is occuring in Midtown, the plan will also give developers some predictability, increasing the vitality and economic stability of the area

According to the CA the next public meetings about the Midtown Plan will be 5:30 to 7 on Wednesday 23 at Circuit Playhouse (formerly Playhouse on the Square), 51 S.
