New Life for C&I Building

(Gates of Memphis image)

The following article was recently in the Memphis Business Journal.

Memphis Business Journal - by Andy Ashby

Visible School has a contract to purchase the former C&I Bank building at 200 Madison from the Greater Memphis Chamber for $1.05 million, with plans to move in by summer 2010.

The iconic, slant-roofed Downtown property would give the Christian music college more room for students and a higher profile for recruiting and fundraising.

“It’s really a perfect solution,” says John Moore, president and CEO of the Chamber. “We not only wanted to sell the building, but we wanted it to serve some purpose relative to the mission of the Chamber and our goals from an economic growth and development perspective for Memphis.”

Visible School started in Lakeland in 2000 with makeshift educational space in one building and a Days Inn as dorms.

Public Input Meeting/ Mini Design Charrette for Overton Square

The Memphis Regional Design Center
in conjunction with
Memphis Heritage and AIA Memphis

invites you to join us for a
Public Input Meeting/ Mini Design Charrette
for
Overton Square
Date: Friday, July 24, 2009
Time: 9:00am to 5:00pm
9:00 am Tour starts at the SW Corner of Madison & Cooper
10:00 am Public Meeting will be located at Memphis Heritage, Howard Hall, 2282 Madison Avenue at Edgewood

The MRDC, MHI and AIA Memphis are interested in your input about the future of Overton Square. The current owners (Fisher Capital) and potential developers (AWG and Sooner Investment Realty) are still not responding to requests for more information on their plans or our suggestion of working with us to determine a solution that is acceptable to the community.
The assumed plans are to demolish the south side of Madison Avenue between Florence and Cooper and place a big box retail center on the southwest end of the existing parking lot with its back to Sidestreet, the Magnolia Room and Mr. Lincoln's. This is not a sustainable solution to the site. The day will begin with a tour of the neighborhood and a brief presentation on the history of Overton Square. The rest of the day will consist of hearing suggestions from you from a consumer point of view as well as a design point of view. These ideas would culminate in a series of site plans and perhaps an image board or character renderings depicting the desired public realm. This may include options of saving the buildings (or portions of them) as well as options for new buildings on the site. Plans generated from the meeting will be shared with the community and the owners/developers.
The tour will begin at 9:00 am at the SW corner of Madison and Cooper. The Public Meeting will be held at Memphis Heritage immediately after the tour at approximately 10:00am. If you can't make it for the entire day, fell free to drop in and out at any time.
Please RSVP as lunch will be provided. Donations for the cost of lunch are greatly appreciated.

Copied from Gates of Memphis blog:
From Shelby Farms Park Conservancy and the Greatest Memphis Greenline:

Shelby Farms Park Conservancy, Shelby County Government and Greater Memphis Greenline have announced two public input meetings for discussion of the design and management of the new urban greenway connecting Midtown Memphis to Shelby Farms Park.
  • July 6 from 7pm-9pm at the Benjamin Hooks Central Library, 3030 Poplar Avenue.

  • July 7 from 6pm-8pm at Agricenter International, 7777 Walnut Grove Road.
The meetings will be an opportunity for citizens to talk about the opportunities and challenges that come with greenways and will feature national trails expert Robert Searns. Representatives from Ritchie Smith Associates, the trail designer, will also be present.

The greenway—a former rail corridor being converted into a multi-use path—will stretch from Tillman Street at Walnut Grove Road to Shelby Farms Park, connecting neighborhoods and providing a safe opportunity for people to recreate, commute and exercise.

Shelby Farms Park Conservancy will manage and operate the greenway, with support from Greater Memphis Greenline—a nonprofit organization whose mission is to collaborate in a public-private partnership with local government in the development of unused railway right-of ways and easements in Memphis and Shelby County, and to create a world-class recreational park/hiking-biking trail system.

Memphis Heritage Needs Your Support!

It is our mission to serve the community as the
voice for Historic Preservation in our City and County.

Many of you may not know that MHI does not receive any funding except through private donations and memberships. We do a lot with a very small operating budget but we need everyone to pitch in to help keep us moving forward.
We know not everyone can afford a membership so we are asking if you can please donate $3.00 for your choice of :

"Bumper Stickers that will change the way you think"...
Your $3.00 really can make a difference !

Bumper Stickers With a Purpose

Often we see bumper stickers as a representation of who the drivers are. Just as politicians use bumper stickers to reach their constituents, Memphis Heritage needs to do the same. Preserving our historic landmarks not only helps us environmentally but it can also save money, plus it provides Memphians with a sense of pride and identity.

Won't you become a supporter of "our ultimate recycling" today?

Even if you don't put stickers on your car, purchasing one will support a cause you believe in and help us continue our work into the future!

Make a difference in your community by supporting the cause and creating community awareness for Memphis Heritage.

"You'll be giving our past a future!"

Check out our Web site here for more information on how to make your donation!
